My Introduction to Orthomolecular Medicine
Orthomolecular treatment for Bipolar 1 Disorder was not something I was familiar with until the age of 26. Thankfully, because my mother was unwilling to give up on me, I did discover what it was and the miracles it could create! My first appointment lasted several hours as numerous tests (urine, stool, blood, and hair samples) were performed. During this time, I would also be required to speak with a nurse specializing in psychiatry. It took just a few minutes in conversation, along with witnessing my behavior and reading over my history to inform me things were worse than originally imagined. I did not suffer from only Bipolar 1 Disorder, but several others as well. In six weeks, my program was complete, and for the first time in my life, I discovered I also suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder (and there are still other disorders as well). Guess I can never handle doing things halfway 🙁
A Brief Consideration of Orthomolecular Therapy for Bipolar 1
So, what is Orthomolecular Therapy, and how can it assist with treating multiple mental disorders? Orthomolecular is a program designed around an individual. Unlike conventional medicine and treatment programs, orthomolecular recognizing each person is different and unique. The knowledge of these differences demands an approach specialized for each individual. Various tests are performed to determine any and all deficiencies a person suffers from, then a nutritional program is designed around this information. An example of how this proves valuable can be uncovered in consideration of the extensive evidence supporting severe deficiencies in all vitamin Bs in individuals who suffer from Bipolar 1 Disorder.
Orthomolecular, Like the Individual, is Always Changing
Each year, the same battery of tests are performed, and unlike in conventional medicine, Orthomolecular adjusts the program with the changes of the individual. In September 2016 my newest tests were performed and a new nutritional program was issued. On a normal basis, the adjusted vitamins and nutrients are provided immediately. The program I need to follow this year requires me to take four different sets of vitamins a day, plus administer a prescription dose of zinc cream daily, a teaspoon of hemp oil twice a day, and also a B12 shot administered every other day. It is not always easy to keep the everything on track, but with the help of my amazing husband and a notification on the cell phone, I manage to stay on track.
Orthomolecular Therapy is a Permanent Way of Life
Alongside with the vitamins, I have to adhere to a strict “dietary” guide, avoiding certain foods. In the weeks ahead, I will begin delving into my micronutrients program, sharing recipes, and providing insight into how each of these things assists in maintaining control over my disorders. I want to help others begin to understand how approaching mental health challenges in a natural manner proves more beneficial than just taking the same medications as everyone else. I will share recipes and insights, and even begin to explore other areas which I have started to change as I strive to get everything back under control after the relapse occuring from the delay in receiving my new program. I hope my experiences and explorations can help others!
